Leonard Haynes has been appointed as senior advisor to the Under Secretary at the U.S. Department of Education. He has been serving as a distinguished adjunct professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at Ohio State University.
Prior, Haynes served as the former assistant secretary for post-secondary education in the administration of George H.W. Bush. He also served as senior director of institutional service for the Office of Post-secondary Education during the Obama administration. Most recently, he was the director of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Having taught at several universities including Howard University, the University of Maryland, Southern University, and George Washington University, Haynes held the position of acting president of Grambling State University in Louisiana and senior assistant to the president of American University in Washington. D.C.
A graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Haynes holds a master?s degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Ohio State University.
