PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) ? Doctors at Stanford University’s children’s hospital have separated two twin girls who were joined at the chest and abdomen.

Two-year-old sisters Angelina and Angelica Sabuco have been in surgery since early Tuesday at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto. The operation was expected to take nine hours.

By mid-afternoon, hospital spokeswoman Reena Mukamal announced the girls had been separated and moved to their own operating rooms for the second phase of surgery ? reconstructing the area where they were connected.

Mukamal said doctors are pleased with the progress of the operation so far.
