Keila Nelums, CEO of Emerge Life Care, LLC, embodies a rare blend of entrepreneurial vision, faith-driven leadership, and deep compassion for community. Rooted in service and guided by purpose, she has built Emerge Life Care from the ground up as a trusted home healthcare agency dedicated to supporting children with complex medical needs and the families who love them. Beyond ownership, Nelums approaches entrepreneurship as a responsibility to use one’s gifts to create meaningful impact where it matters most.

What does entrepreneurship mean to you?

Nelums. Entrepreneurship, to me, represents freedom—the freedom to choose impact, purpose, and service. The choices we make ultimately shape who we become, and when our time is limited, those choices are often driven by necessity rather than intention. Entrepreneurship creates space to operate from desire rather than obligation.

How has building Emerge Life Care shaped your identity as a business leader?

Nelums. Building Emerge Life Care has strengthened my identity as a leader who is values-driven, community-focused, and intentional about how I use my time and influence. It has taught me that leadership is not just about decision-making, but also about choosing daily to lead with integrity and heart.

What were the biggest risks you took early in your journey, and what gave you the confidence to push forward?

Nelums. One of the greatest risks in entrepreneurship is people. Every partnership, every hire, every collaboration requires trust. I took a chance on building a team, and I am grateful that I chose wisely. The people around me treat Emerge Life Care as if it were their own, and that shared sense of ownership has made all the difference. They are truly the wheels that keep the bus moving forward, even when the road feels uncertain.

How do you ensure that your entrepreneurial decisions remain aligned with the heart-centered purpose of your work?

Nelums. That alignment begins with my Christian values. Service is at the core of who I am, and when I connect nurses to families, I look for compassion, empathy, and shared values. I believe that care is most effective when it is rooted in genuine concern for others. By hiring individuals whose hearts align with the mission, I ensure that every business decision supports not just growth, but meaningful service.

What guidance would you offer to someone who is passionate about helping others but unsure where to begin?

Nelums. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals—people who are either heading where you want to go, or who have already been there. Service-based work, especially in home healthcare, is deeply heart-centered. If your heart isn’t fully in it, the work will quickly feel heavy and exhausting. When your passion aligns with your purpose, service becomes a labor of love rather than a daily burden.

What practices, habits, or mindset have helped you stay motivated, focused, and connected to your mission in challenging moments?

Nelums.  I consider myself a lifelong student. As long as I am living, I believe I should always be learning. That mindset keeps my leadership skills sharp and evolving. I study colleagues, observe leaders in other industries, and learn from people who inspire me—without competition or comparison. Applied knowledge is power, and continuous learning fuels both my motivation and my growth.

How do you cultivate a company culture that reflects qualities essential to delivering high-impact care services?

Nelums. I intentionally invest in tools and systems that make daily tasks easier for my staff, recognizing that technology can enhance efficiency. However, I am equally committed to preserving human connection. While we utilize virtual tools, I also prioritize in-person gatherings where we conduct training, build relationships, and reinforce our core values face-to-face. That personal investment has strengthened our culture and deepened trust within the team.

What critical lessons did you learn about establishing a service-based business, particularly in an industry where trust, reliability, and compassion drive success?

Nelums. Trial and error taught me the importance of truly getting to know the nurses I hire—beyond resumes and interviews. I ask deeper questions about their personal and professional goals because alignment matters. Nurses are the face of Emerge Life Care, not me. Their presence, character, and compassion directly reflect the company’s values. My goal has always been to select individuals who will deliver exceptional care with excellence and integrity.

How do you envision expanding your services or influence?

Nelums. I encourage others to find their passion and pursue it wholeheartedly. If making a difference in your community is your calling, entrepreneurship provides the freedom to do so. There is nothing wrong with working for someone else, but it’s important to recognize that doing so means operating on their time and toward their goals. Looking ahead, I plan to expand into behavioral health and foster care placement services. There are so many broken homes and children in need of stability, guidance, and love. My hope is to help heal the aftermath of those storms and leave a legacy rooted in service, compassion, and lasting impact.
