Hayd?e Brown is one of fewer than 100 orthopedic surgeons in the United States who are women of color. She credits her time at The Ailey School with providing her ?incomparable training as a dancer, exposure to the field of orthopedic surgery and the discipline to pursue medicine.? As a 16-year-old fellow at Ailey, Brown was injured from intense training and an orthopedic surgeon who treats dancers helped her to recover. The experience changed her life. ?Becoming an orthopedic surgeon who treats dancers appealed to me because I get to enjoy the academic rigor of medicine, and remain a part of the dance world,? she states.
Today, Dr. Brown is the founding member and owner of Hayd?e C Brown, MD, PLLC doing business as Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics of New York, the practice she opened a year and a half ago. Her history with Ailey has come full circle, she notes, explaining that dancers and weekend warriors are among her most frequent clients. ?I recently treated a former professional dancer who continues to be active with a new injury. We were able to modify certain activities and footwear to return her to what she loves,? Brown recounts. ?Having been injured as a dancer, I understand how important it is to recover while continuing the work.?
Brown received a bachelor?s degree from Wellesley College, her medical degree from New York University, and completed her training at the world-renowned Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She believes in a holistic approach to detect medical problems. ?A simple discussion about nutrition and a patient?s overall lifestyle can reveal a lot. Even the kind of vitamins one takes, or doesn?t take, can be a determining factor in treating a patient,? she explains.
A proud mother of one, Brown hopes?one day to perform medical missions?internationally.
