Twenty years ago, Chanel Christoff Davis and a business partner identified an overlooked niche in taxation and seized the opportunity to establish Davis Davis & Harmon, LLC (DDH), the country’s largest woman- and minority-owned sales tax advisory practice. Today, the award-winning firm serves a multinational corporate clientele in sales tax refund recovery, audit defense, process controls/compliance reviews, mergers and acquisitions, voluntary disclosures, and legal research/opinions.
“We know sales tax law, how to interpret it, and how to advocate for our clients,” Davis, DDH’s CEO and partner, explains. “We deliver innovative sales tax solutions that return money to our client’s bottom-line.”
The firm’s success is a testament to tenacity and perseverance, the New Orleans native says. “When we started in 2001, ours wasn’t the most popular tax area. I felt in my heart that our specialty eventually would catch on because these are big issues companies have to face.” She was right. The business exploded in 2018 after the U.S. Supreme Court decided online businesses also had to charge sales tax.
A fan of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, Davis paints in her free time, focusing on the joy of African-American women and children in everyday life. “I started painting because I wanted to document my life and my world for future generations. It’s also a great stress reliever. Being an entrepreneur is a huge pressure. Art provides a space for me to gain clarity and work through complicated issues. It’s the best form of relaxation.”
The executive producer and host of Follow the Leader podcast, she has been widely recognized and honored for her work and for her mentorship and support of women-owned businesses. She holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of New Orleans and is a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation and the National Association of Black Accountants.
