Woman Drowns Child, Threatens Siblings: What Exactly Happened?
Nakia Martin was babysitting her cousin’s children, while their mother was in Indiana at the time the incident took place. Martin was arrested for the murder of the child she was caring for at 39 years of age. The affidavit filed mentioned Martin called for assistance after the child was foaming from the mouth and cold to touch. The incident took place on the 9th of September 2023. Martin apparently noticed the child wasn’t doing well. She then called a family member before the authorities. The child was found in the bedroom, dead, when the officers arrived at the scene.

The document also stated that the officers found puddles surrounding a large and dirty Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom where they found the child dead. Officers also noticed how Martin seemed distressed but still told the officers about the night before. According to what Martin Initially told the officers, she bathed the children and put lotion on her as well as one of the other children. She also reportedly admitted to being in the same bathtub with the children. The police officers also asked if she bathed with the children. She replied she didn’t remember. She was then asked if she reported a drowning, to which she allegedly answered she didn’t think so. However, further in the investigation, she accepted that she “killed a kid.”

The investigating officers then called the siblings of the deceased child for an interview. Both the siblings told the officers a far more detailed story. The siblings told the officers “Something happened, the Devil.” The children also told the officers the lotion Martin admitted putting on the children was “blessing oil.” The police then contacted the victim’s mother. They told her Martin was trying to baptize the deceased girl.
The mother informed the police about Martin’s concerning behavior and her rants about God. Martin allegedly told the children God would show them something. The daughter who survived also allegedly said that Martin attempted to drown her and threatened her with Hell to keep the incident a secret. The boy said that he was in the same bathtub and saw his sister struggling to breathe and pulling Martin’s hair. He also said that he tried to help but Martin stopped him.
Martin’s Arrest
Martin was later arrested in December 2024 and was extradited to Harris County in Texas. She was charged with capital murder of a child under the age of 10 years. Her next hearing in court is on the 20th of March. The delay in the arrest was reportedly because of interviews related to the investigation as well as the autopsy report.
