Scott, of a pickup truck. The shooting has sparked anger across the country, with some demanding complete transparency and accountability.
What Happened?
Marcus Johnson was riding on his all-terrain vehicle on a dirt road near his home when he came across 45-year-old Robert Thompson, who owns some local land, according to police reports. Thompson insisted that Johnson was on his property, while Johnson’s family argued he was on a public access road. The men had been arguing when Thompson fired several shots, witnesses say, hitting Johnson in the chest. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Thompson has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, but many believe the charges should be more serious. “This was not an accident. “This was a preplanned act of violence,” Tanya Johnson, Johnson’s sister, said at a news conference. “My brother was unarmed, and not a threat to anyone. “He was having a normal day.”
Community Outrage
The shooting has left the community in shock, where Johnson was a local celebrity beloved for his generous heart. He was an outdoorsman and a devoted father of two, friends and family members said. People gathered for a vigil in his honor on Feb. 12, where hundreds held signs protesting what they said was a demand for justice.
“Marcus didn’t deserve to have to go through this,” one attendee said. “We’re sick and tired of Black lives being lost over stupidity,” Allen said. This has to stop.”
The case has also gained national attention, with groups like the N.A.A.C.P. calling for a federal investigation. “This is another manifestation of how Black life is devalued in America,” said Derrick Johnson, president and chief executive of the N.A.A.C.P. “We demand accountability and systemic change to prevent this from ever happening again.”
The Role of Race
There are many questions about whether the shooting had any race component. Johnson’s family and supporters believe Thompson’s actions stemmed from a racial bias, pointing to a history of such incidents in the region.
“If Marcus were a white man, would this happen?” asked Tanya Johnson. “We’ll never know for sure, but we can’t eliminate the possibility that race was a factor.”
Thompson’s lawyer has said there was never any racial motivation behind his client’s actions, and that he had acted in self-defense and believed Johnson was a threat. But this explanation hasn’t calmed public anger.
Legal Proceedings
As of February 2025, Thompson is awaiting trial while out on bail. Many are watching it closely, eager for it to set a precedent for how such incidents are handled in the future.

Marcus Johnson’s family has vowed to fight for justice and ensure that his death is not in vain. They started a GoFundMe campaign for legal fees and to assist Johnson’s children.
“We’re not going to stop and rest until we get the justice that Marcus deserves,” Tanya Johnson said. He was a good man, and his life mattered.”
