Studies reveal that men and women are motivated by different factors. Considering the motivational differences between the sexes, how can you possibly reach out to every person in your team and encourage them to give it their best? Well, you need to get past the gender differences and learn what best motivates them if you want your team to succeed.

What Motivates Employees in the Workplace?

Studies suggest that different motivational factors elicit a different response between male and female employees. According to a research conducted at the University of Virginia, men and women do not share the same perspectives, especially when it comes to determining what is more important in their professional life. In the same manner, the factors that motivate them in the workplace also differ.

Another study suggests that men are motivated by instrumental values (financial rewards) while women put a higher preference on softer issues (recognition, respect, interpersonal relationships at work and a better work-life balance).

Financial rewards. While some workplace studies show that employee bonuses and other financial rewards affect men and women equally, some studies suggest that men respond better to this driving force. As such, men will work harder and expect a raise or a promotion with greater anticipation as compared to their female counterparts.

Recognition. According to a study conducted by shl.com, a global leader in talent management, a pleasant working condition motivates female employees to get out of bed and go to work every morning. Frequent verbal and written recognition can make female employees feel more appreciated. Simple gestures such as remembering her birthday and commending her for her achievements will definitely go a long, long way.

Respect. While both male and female employees appreciate a respectful and ethical work environment, women consider this as an integral part of working in an organization. ?

Power. Power plays a crucial role in every aspect of a man’s life. They have a natural inclination to seek greatness and sense of value, and appreciate opportunities to take responsibility and influence other people.?

Teamwork and competition. Men prefer to work on their own while women love to work with other people and develop positive relationships with co-workers. On the other hand, men welcome competition in the workplace.

Training. While both male and female employees appreciate opportunities to further their knowledge and qualifications, men will readily accept any training opportunities while women would most likely prefer training opportunities that wouldn’t interfere with their domestic responsibilities.?

Now that you know what motivates men and women in the workplace, you will definitely have a better chance of keeping them on task to ensure the success of your organization.
