Walter E. Massey was elected chairman of Bank of America Corp.
The president emeritus of Morehouse College in Atlanta replaces Ken Lewis, who will remain CEO of the Charlotte, N.C.-based bank.
Massey has been a board member of the bank since 1998 and serves on the audit committee. He was a director of BofA Corp. from 1993 to 1998 and currently is a director of McDonald’s Corp. Previously, he was a director of Delta Air Lines, Motorola and BP PLC. Massey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and mathematics from Morehouse in 1958 and a master’s and doctoral degrees in physics from Washington University in St. louis, Mo.
He served as a president of Morehouse from August 1995 to June 2007. Prior to that, he was provost and senoir vicew president for academic affairs at the University of California.
