MADRID (AP) ? Volcano experts in Spain’s Canary Islands say the threat of an eruption on Hierro island has eased after pressure in the area was reduced following an undersea event this week.
A spokesman for a vulcanology institute, David Calvo, told Spanish National Radio on Thursday that while authorities remain vigilant, there was no cause for alarm.
About 600 residents of La Restinga coastal town were evacuated Tuesday following the off-coast eruption.
A geographic institute said it was studying two large sea stains that were caused by the eruption coming through two openings. It said the eased pressure meant further measures affecting the island’s 11,000 inhabitants were unlikely.
Hierro, one of seven Canary Islands, has been on alert in recent weeks for fear of an eruption.
