NAME: John C. “Jack” Bogle

AGE: 82

EDUCATION: Princeton University, 1951; Bachelor’s degree in economics

CAREER: Founded The Vanguard Group Inc. in 1974 and launched the first index mutual fund, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund, in 1975. Before that he worked at a predecessor company, starting in 1951. Served as Vanguard’s chairman and chief executive until 1996, and senior chairman until 2000. Now runs Vanguard’s Bogle Financial Markets Research Center, a think tank.

Valley Forge, Pa.-based Vanguard manages nearly $1.7 trillion in U.S. mutual fund assets, offering more than 170 funds.

PERSONAL: Lives in Bryn Mawr, Pa., with his wife, Eve. They are parents of six children and grandparents of 12. His 10th book, “The Clash of Cultures: Investment vs. Speculation,” is due to be published next year. He also has a blog, at www.johncbogle.com
