This leaves a lot of people wondering whether they should go ahead and take advantage of this offer now, or wait for a few more months. The Pros and Cons of Downloading Windows 10
The Pros
- It?s free. Customers who are running on Windows 7 and 8.1 can get a free update to Windows 10 if they avail of the offer within one year of release (until July 29, 2016). If you decide to upgrade after this period, you will have to pay $119.99 for the Windows 10 Home version or $199 for the Windows 10 Pro version.
- It runs across all devices. With Continuum, Microsoft?s own version of Apple?s Handoff, apps can run smoothly across all devices. There may be differences between user interfaces but the codebase remains the same. Thus, users can use another device to continue what they were doing on another device.
- It is fast and secure. Windows 10 has an impressive core operating system so you can be sure that it is ultra fast and secure.
- It comes fully integrated with Cortana. This is where things get more interesting. Windows 10 comes fully integrated with Cortana, Microsoft Windows Phone voice assistant. Now, you can use voice commands to open your browser, create new emails, and set reminders, among others.?
- It is great for gamers. Gamers will definitely fall in love with the new Windows 10 since it can be integrated with DirectX 12 and Xbox One.
The Cons
- Not everyone is eligible to get if for free. Although Windows 10 upgrades are virtually free, Windows Vista and Windows XP users are not eligible for upgrades. Customers who are using Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 Enterprise are also excluded. Those who have pirated versions of Windows can only get free upgrades if they agree to sign up as beta testers.
- It may be free but it comes with a cost. When you upgrade to Windows 10, you agree to receive, download and install all updates. You can delay it (Home users can delay up to one month while Pro users can stall up to eight months) but the updates will be installed automatically after this period. This makes Home users susceptible to bad updates which may cause their devices to slow down or crash unexpectedly.
Considering these things, it may be best to wait it out before upgrading to Windows 10. Hopefully, the bugs will be fixed as Microsoft rolls out their major update by October. But until then, you may need to proceed with caution.
