Univision, the premier company for Latinos in the U.S., has acquired the online African-American news site, The Root.
Launched in 2008 by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and Donald E. Graham and owned by Graham Holdings Company, The Root focuses on politics, culture and history.
Since its launch, The Root has gained 70,000 followers on Twitter and has extensively covered the Black Twitter movement.
According to The Root, Donna Byrd, vice president, digital, and publisher of The Root, will join the leadership team of Univision Digital, and Lyne Pitts will continue in her role as the managing editor of The Root.
Byrd released the following statement about the acquisition: “We are excited about our new relationship with Univision. The combination of our two companies strengthens our collective ability to engage the changing American population. In addition, it will provide The Root access to greater resources, as well as an opportunity to expand our reach and scale our business.”
