TOKYO (AP) ? Twitter Inc. and Japan’s biggest homegrown social networking site mixi Inc. have joined forces to deepen links and strengthen their ground against Facebook’s rapid expansion.
For Twitter, the partnership with a local social network could point to a new strategy as it seeks to accelerate global growth.
For mixi, the announcement comes as it tries to fend off a surging Facebook, which has surged in popularity in Japan this year.
While Twitter is a public platform, mixi is a closed network where users typically have a small group of friends. The Japanese company hopes that with Twitter, it can better integrate public conversations with its tight-knit communities.
