California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, in a recent post on X, accused the President of the United States, Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops in Los Angeles as the act of a dictator. The National Guard troops were deployed in Los Angeles to deal with the violent protests over federal immigration raids in LA. What Exactly Happened In Los Angeles, California? 

On the third day of the violent protests that were going on in Los Angeles, National Guard troops were deployed at Trump’s order around federal buildings. The LA police clashed with several demonstrators and declared many rallies unlawful assemblies. The demonstrators reportedly threw concrete, bottles, and other objects at police. Self-driving cars from Alphabet’s Waymo were also set on fire, and arrests were initiated. The 101 Freeway, which is a significant thoroughfare in downtown Los Angeles,  was also blocked. Many groups of demonstrators were carrying Mexican flags as well as signs and denounced the US Immigration authorities.

What Did California Gov Gavin Newsom Say About The National Guard Deployment?

The Trump administration, to quell the protests going on in Los Angeles, deployed a total of 2,000 National Guard troops around federal infrastructure. In response to that, Newsom shared a video of Trump on Social media. The video showcased Trump stating that he would charge state and local officials federally in case they interfere with immigration enforcement. Newsom captioned the video with him accusing Trump of causing mass chaos, provoking violence, and militarizing cities. Further in the post, he stated that these acts are the acts of a dictator and not a President.

What Did Trump Say About The Protests Going On In LA?

On the 7th of June, 2025, President Trump mentioned on a social media post that the federal government has to step in to stop the protests. Calling the California Gov, Gavin Newsom, “Gavin Newscum,” he stated that the federal government will have to step in to solve the problem of riots, the way it should be solved. He also blamed the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, for their inaction. In a statement on Sunday, he called the protestors violent and insurrectionist mobs. He also stated that he had directed his cabinet officers to take all actions necessary to stop the riots. The Mayor, in reaction to this, also called the deployment of National Guard troops unlawful.

Clash Between Newsom And Trump Not The First

This is not the first time California Gov Gavin Newsom and President Trump have clashed. When the federal government threatened to cease California’s federal funding. It happened after a transgender high school athlete in California managed to qualify for the state championship. The two have also clashed on various other topics like tariffs, fighting fires, water management, and more. In the latest clash between the two, border czar Tom Homan stated that he was going to charge anyone who interfered with the immigration operation. In response to that, Newsom challenged him to arrest him and mentioned that his threats would not stop him from standing up for California.
