Ex-U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken out on Russia’s late-night shelling of Kyiv, presenting a blunt and direct message: “Vladimir, STOP!”

The condemnation followed one of the most lethal attacks on the Ukrainian capital in 2025. More than 140 drones and 70 missiles were fired in one night, killing at least eight civilians and injuring dozens. Residential homes, schools, and vital infrastructure throughout Kyiv were reduced to rubble.

In a tweet posted on social media, Trump wrote, “I am not pleased with the Russian attacks on KYIV. Not needed, and very poor timing.”

This is regarded as one of the strongest public condemnations Trump has made of Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent times.

A City Under Fire

Kyiv awoke to destruction on Thursday morning. The magnitude of the assault stunned even veteran defense experts. More than 40 fires raged across the city and its surrounding areas, local officials said.

Among those injured were at least six children. Emergency responders scrambled to the scene, working through the day and night to extract survivors trapped under rubble. Dozens of residents are still missing.

This assault was among the most severe strikes against Ukraine’s capital city since the war erupted.

A Strained Peace Process

Ukraine’s government soon denounced the attack, accusing Russia of sabotaging peace efforts in a calculated way.

The Ukrainian officials have confirmed that tentative de-escalation talks had only been held just days before. However, they now believe Moscow never meant to genuinely negotiate.

As per one of the Ukrainian spokesmen, the negotiations were a smokescreen. He added that “The Kremlin planned this step all along.”

Trump’s Evolving Tone

Trump’s statement is especially surprising because of the previous tone the president has set towards Russia. Throughout his administration and post-administration life, Trump has consistently offered praise to Putin’s mode of leadership.

This week’s missile strike seems to have taken that too far.

Experts think Trump’s tough rhetoric could be crucial. As, it is intended to re-establish his role as a world leader and peacemaker, particularly with the U.S. election season revving up.

“Trump has attempted to be seen as a person who can negotiate peace,” declared a political strategist. “This comment makes him look good on foreign policy while distancing himself from an increasingly belligerent Putin.”

Global Reactions Build

Trump’s condemnation is the latest in growing international condemnation. NATO officials labeled the attacks a “gross violation of international law.” European Union leaders made statements of support for Ukraine and promised further humanitarian assistance.

The United Nations has meanwhile called an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated he was “deeply alarmed by the escalating violence.”

Public Outcry

On the streets of Kyiv, people feel everything from sadness to outrage. Victims of the attack have called for more forceful international action against Russia.

“We are tired of words,” stated one local resident. “We need protection, not condolences.”

Social media has been filled with graphic scenes of devastation and calls for international intervention. Hashtag #StandWithKyiv has gone viral once again.

What Comes Next

As tensions climb, the path to peace seems less certain than ever. Trump’s words might put pressure on Russia politically, but whether Putin will reverse his approach remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Ukraine remains on edge anticipating further assaults, as weary rescue teams search for survivors through piles of rubble.

As Trump’s “Vladimir, STOP!” rings out on headlines, the world waits—fearing it might go on deaf ears.

All in all, Trump’s move will be interesting to follow as it will play an important role in the ongoing Ukraine Russian war.
