The United States of America has officially averted the Donald Trump government shutdown after the Senate passed the spending bill. The bill in question is a Republican-led measure to keep the government funded for the upcoming 6 months. It was passed in the Senate 54-46. Two Democrats, along with all but one Republican senator, came together voting yes. The US President Trump will now have to sign the bill into law before Friday midnight. Donald Trump Government Shutdown Averted: Democrat Chuck Schumer Votes To Advance The Bill 

Democrat Chuck Schumer, who is the Senate minority leader, along with 9 other Democrats, gave their nod to the bill. The vote came after a fierce debate and allowed the Republican-led bill to pass the procedural hurdle. Schumer announced on Thursday that he would vote to allow the bill to move forward. Chuck assured his colleagues he doesn’t support the bill on a personal level. However, a non-pass will trigger a government shutdown which would be a far worse result. The voting that was scheduled on Friday ultimately resulted in the bill passing the procedural. It is now sent to Trump who will sign it and turn it into law.

What Alexandria Ocasio Cortez Said About The Decision?

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, who is serving as US Representative, criticized Schumer’s decision, calling it a huge slap in the face. She also reportedly mentioned in her statement that there’s a wide sense of betrayal among the party. Cortez also added that passing the bill confides with the chaos as well as the reckless cuts Elon Musk is pursuing. She also said that the Senate Democrats who gave their nod to the bill are robbing the federal government to finance tax cuts for billionaires.

What Ted Cruz And Donald Trump Said About The Decision?

Senator Ted Cruz went ahead and criticized the Democrats mentioning how they are conducting a “political theater” and appreciated the passage of the bill. He mentioned in his statement that the government is funded and they should now get back to work. On the other hand, President Trump offered a rare praise of Schumer’s decision. He added in his statement that a non-pass would have destroyed the country. However, the approval will now lead them to new heights.

What Happens Next?

The bill has now passed the major procedural hurdle and is sent to Trump. The legislation is going to keep most of the federal funding levels from the Biden Administration the same. Major changes in the spending will still be there. The military spending will witness an increase of $6 billion. This funding will come into use for various purposes like border security and veterans’ healthcare. On the other hand, the non-defense spending Will witness a cut of $13 billion. The local authorities of Washington DC expressed their fear that the bill would result in a $1 billion cut in federal funds for the city. However, the Senate passed a separate bill keeping the current operating budget of the city intact.
