69-Year-Old Vancouver Resident Cancelled His Annual Trip To US

Peter Mulholland, a 69-year-old resident from Vancouver, cancelled his annual trip to the United States of America. He, along with his wife, used to visit Seattle every year to watch the Toronto Blue Jays play against The Mariners. However, the tradition ended this year. Peter was already enraged due to Trump’s tariffs on imported goods from Canada as well as the talks about Canada becoming the 51st state. But, the final straw that pushed him away was Trump referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a dictator.

Travel Consultant Reports A Drop In New Requests To Travel To The US

Peter Mulholland’s cancellation is just one of the many tourists’ requests to cancel their travels to the United States of America. The travel consultants in Vancouver also report a drop in new requests from tourists to travel to the States. McKenzie McMillan is a travel consultant based in Vancouver. He said he has not received any new requests or new interests in US travel. It’s been about two weeks since he received any new tourist requests for travel to the United States.

One of the main reasons for the cancellations, according to him, is the Trump Tariffs administration has imposed. He also mentioned that the talks about Canada becoming the 51st state is where the tourists are making a more firm decision of not travelling to the States.

How This May Affect US?

According to the statistics from the U.S. Travel Association, Canada is one of the top sources of international visitors to the States. Around 20.4 million visitors from Canada came to the US last year generating around $20.5 billion in spending for the country. This supported around 140,000 jobs across the United States of America. The association reports a 10% reduction in travel from Canadian tourists may result in a loss of $2.1 billion in spending and 14,000 American jobs.

Air Canada Is Monitoring The Situation

The five states that receive the most travellers from Canada are Florida, California, Nevada, New York and Texas. Air Canada, which is the biggest airline in Canada, is not really seeing any reductions in travel. However, it is currently monitoring the situation. Mark Galardo is the Executive Vice President for revenue and network planning. He talked about the situation in Air Canada’s quarterly earnings call last week. He mentioned that they are currently anticipating a slowdown as well.

WestJet Reports 25% Drop In Demand For Flights To US

WestJet, which is another one of the biggest Canadian airlines, reported a 25% drop in US flight demands in the first few weeks of this year. The airline, in a statement, mentioned they believe the drop is because of the differences in currency exchange rates. However, the company is reviewing the situation with the Canadian government regarding the impact of tariffs. The company also assures they will continue serving wherever there is demand.
