The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has officially signed an executive order that has extended the deadline for the sale of TikTok in the US for 90 days. His first order that gave the video sharing app a reprieve came on his very first day at the office. If you are someone who wants to know more about the TikTok ban extension from Donald Trump and its effect, the following article is for you. It also brings you important information like who will probably buy TikTok in the US in the coming days.
TikTok And Its Struggles With The Law In The United States
ByteDance’s globally famous video-sharing app TikTok started facing troubles in the United States when the country passed a law that banned all Chinese apps unless they are sold. As per the lawmakers, TikTok posed a severe risk to the national security of the United States of America. The law was passed amid the fears of the Chinese government forcing ByteDance or TikTok to hand over data on US users. TikTok challenged the law in court, but the court upheld the law, and it was removed from the app stores across the US for a day before President Trump reprieved the app.
TikTok Reacts To Trump Granting It A Third Extension
The Trump administration has granted another extension to the TikTok ban this Wednesday. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced the 90-day extension and mentioned that the parent company must close the deal within the time frame. This is so that the American people can also enjoy using TikTok with the assurance of their data’s safety. TikTok issued an official statement after the announcement expressing its gratitude toward President Trump and his leadership, as well as his support. The statement further added that TikTok will continue to work with Vice President Vance’s Office.
What Did Mark Warner Say About The TikTok Ban Extension?
Back in 2020, during Trump’s first term, he tried to force a sale of TikTok to an American buyer. However, he seems to have a different approach in his latest term. Trump mentioned that he has developed a warm spot in his heart for TikTok as it helped him win among youth by 34 points in the 2024 presidential elections. Mark Warner, Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Vice Chairman, who’s also a Democrat, mentioned that the Trump administration is flouting the law. He further added that the administration is ignoring its own national security findings about the risks PRC-controlled TikTok poses. Warner also mentioned how an executive order cannot sidestep the law but that’s exactly what Trump is trying to do.
Who Are The Potential Buyers Of TikTok In The US?
As per the new extension, TikTok must seal a deal in the US before the 17th of September 2025, or it will face a ban like other Chinese apps. President Donald Trump once stated that there are a lot of investors who are interested in closing a deal. He also went ahead and proposed a relief in US tariffs on China if the Chinese government approves the sale of TikTok. However, the parent company of TikTok will probably not seal a deal without approval from the Chinese government.
Many potential buyers have reportedly stepped forward to buy TikTok in the US. According to the reports, Amazon has made an offer to the White House to acquire TikTok. However, we have no official confirmation from the company regarding the offer as of yet. President Trump once mentioned he’ll be open to sealing a deal on the sale of TikTok with Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, as well as Elon Musk. However, Elon Musk refused to have any interest in buying the Chinese video-sharing app.
Other potential buyers of TikTok include Frank McCourt, along with Canadian businessman Kevin O’Leary. Co-founder of Reddit, Alexis Ohanian, also joined McCourt in his bid to buy TikTok last month.
Jimmy Donaldson, who is famously known as MrBeast, is also reportedly looking to buy a portion of TikTok and become a part of a group of investors. On the other hand, the founder of OnlyFans, Tim Stokely, also offered to buy TikTok. Microsoft, Blackstone, Andreessen Horowitz, and Perplexity AI are also in the race to acquire TikTok.
