Alpha Natural Resources Inc., down 71 cents at $16.61

The Bristol, Va.-based coal producer said that Michael J. Quillen, the chairman of its board of directors, is stepping down.

BHP Billiton Ltd., down $2.50 at $73.01

The mining company said that Chinese demand for iron ore, used for making steel, is falling after rising between 2000 and 2012.

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., up $1.03 at $15.28

The movie studio’s shares rose to a new 52-week high. “The Hunger Games,” opening Friday, could be a huge hit for the company.

Williams Companies Inc., up 88 cents at $31.30

The natural gas distributor said it will buy a natural gas-gathering subsidiary of Caiman Energy for about $2.5 billion.

Caterpillar Inc., down $2.97 at $110.76

The heavy equipment maker said that the pace of its retail machine sales slowed in recent months after a jump in sales last year.

Adobe Systems Inc., down $1.35 at $33.16

The maker of design software said that its fiscal first-quarter net income fell 21 percent due to its higher operating costs.

Mission West Properties Inc., down 23 cents at $9.77

A Stifel Nicolaus analyst downgraded the real estate investment trust to “Hold” from “Buy” after its shares hit his target price.
