Being a great leaderLeadership is a learned behavior that comes from an accumulation of experiences and circumstances

Contrary to what you may have been told, there is no such thing as a ?born leader.? Leadership is a learned behavior that comes from an accumulation of experiences and circumstances, including unforeseen failures. If you want to become a great leader, you have to work at it. Check out this guide to becoming a great leader:

  1. Make others feel comfortable.
Good leaders don’t intimidate when they enter a room. Instead, they remain humble despite their power and title, and they encourage their colleagues to voice their opinions. They make them feel safe to share their points of view and perspectives, and they create an approachable environment.
  2. Communicate expectations.
Communication skills are key to becoming a successful leader. They continually remind their employees of their business’s mission and core values, and they communicate viable objectives.
  3. Be accountable.
Great leaders set a standard and meet it. They are accountable to their colleagues and their needs, showing that they are focused on the success of the entire organization.
  4. Practice what you preach.
Leading by example is incredibly effective. True leaders are mindful of their actions and know they must consistently practice what they preach because everyone is observing them.
  5. Seek counsel.
It may seem like leaders know it all, and they often do ? but only because they ask questions and seek counsel when needed. The best leaders have a strong thirst for knowledge and are always trying to learn new things because they want to better themselves.
  6. Avoid procrastination.
Tackling problems head-on is a characteristic of all great leaders. They resist the temptation to procrastinate and don’t shy away from uncomfortable circumstances. Instead, they learn from them.
  7. Keep a positive attitude.
Leaders set a positive and inspiring tone in the office, which motivates their colleagues to take action. Their positive energy also makes them respected and well-liked, even in the face of failures. Instead of derailing momentum, these failures only make their attitude stronger.
  8. Build relationships.
Successful leaders expand their world by fostering mutually beneficial relationships. They associate with people who can grow their sphere of influence for both their own personal advancement, but also the advancement of others.
  9. Teach.
Taking the time to mentor colleagues is a characteristic of great leaders. They make the investment in time and energy to share knowledge with their employees and sponsor those who are eager and talented enough to advance.
  10. Make decisions.
Leaders are experts at making decisions. They reach strategic conclusions to sustain progress and make things happen, and they don’t waste their time on irrelevant issues.
