Tai Dixon, Esq.
Managing Director, National Talent Recruitment
Teach For America
As the managing director of national talent recruitment for Teach For America, Tai A. Dixon oversees recruitment of staff members from diverse professional backgrounds to lead Teach For America’s work across 14 national teams. “I get to work with so many different professionals who are on the cusp of making a decision about whether their career is aligned with their ultimate goals in life,” says Dixon. “I really enjoy being able to usher people through that process.”
Dixon left an unfulfilling position as an attorney at a Baltimore law firm to join Teach For America’s staff. She made that decision after a period of soul-searching that revealed that the last time she felt truly engaged at work was when she was teaching 7th and 8th grade English as a Teach For America corps member six years earlier. She is passionate about the role education can play in transforming lives. Her mother, a teacher, and her father ensured that she had the resources and support necessary to succeed. “Without that support and without my parents being so relentless about my success, a very different story would have been possible for me,” she says. “That story played out for a lot of my peers in the Philadelphia public school system.”
Dixon holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Spelman College, a master’s in education from the University of
St. Thomas, and a Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law. Her love of education and concern about the personal and professional development of young adults extends beyond her role at Teach For America. Among her various volunteer activities, she is an assistant coach to Howard University’s Charles Hamilton Houston National Moot Court Team and an ed-reform seminar leader for the annual UNCF Walton Scholars Program. “This is my life’s work, whether or not it’s my job,” she says.
