TAKING CREDIT: Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, hailed the online encyclopedia’s role in helping halt U.S. legislation aimed at cracking down on Internet piracy.

WHAT HAPPENED: Wikipedia was among a number of sites that argued the bills before Congress would hurt technological innovation and infringe on free-speech rights. Wikipedia’s English pages blacked out for 24 hours in protest.

RESULT: Congress postponed the legislation indefinitely.
