THE DECISION: Hewlett-Packard Co. is making its webOS mobile system available as open-source software that anyone can use and modify freely.
ABOUT THE SYSTEM: Although the software is intuitive, products using it never caught on with consumers or developers amid the popularity of the iPhone and the iPad and phones running Google’s Android software.
WHAT THIS MEANS: HP still plans to develop and support webOS. It hopes that by offering it to the open-source community, more mobile apps will be developed.
