STRONG BOTTOM LINE: Verizon Communications Inc. said its net income doubled in the third quarter to $1.4 billion, as revenue rose 5.4 percent from last year to $27.9 billion.
BEHIND THE SCENES: Most of the increase was due to adjustments to the values of Verizon’s pension funds and liabilities. Verizon Wireless continued to do well, but the wireline division was hurt by a strike and Hurricane Irene.
LOOKING AHEAD: Verizon expects operating results to bounce back in the fourth quarter, which has already seen the launch of the iPhone 4S. It’s clearing up the storm- and strike-related backlog.
