Summary Box: Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL hook up for ads

AD ALLIANCE: Microsoft Corp, Yahoo Inc. and AOL Inc. are teaming up to sell some of the Internet ad space that they have been having trouble filling on their own.

THE PROD: All three companies have been losing ground to Google Inc. and Facebook in a key online marketing segment known as display advertising.

THE HOPE: By sharing resources, Microsoft, Yahoo and AOL are betting they can save money and selling more advertising.

STLLL RIVALS: The companies vowed to still compete against each other. For that reason, they don’t expect regulatory resistance before the deal takes effect in January.
