Summary Box: Microsoft 4Q profit climbs

THE REVENUE: Microsoft Corp. said Thursday that its fiscal fourth-quarter revenue rose 8 percent compared with the same period last year to $17.4 billion, higher than the $17.2 billion analysts polled by FactSet expected.

THE POSITIVES: The world’s largest software maker’s growth was aided by sales of its Office software suite and several other offerings, such as its Xbox video game console and server sales to businesses.

THE NEGATIVE: Revenue from the unit that includes Microsoft’s Windows operating system dipped 1 percent, marking its third-straight quarterly decline. The slip indicates consumers are buying fewer computers running Windows, and may also show more are switching to tablet computers instead of upgrading their existing machines.
