Summary Box: Facebook aims to help prevent suicide

NEW PROGRAM: People who express suicidal thoughts on Facebook will be able to connect with a crisis counselor through the social network’s chat messaging system.

HOW IT WORKS: If a friend spots a suicidal thought on someone’s page, that person can report it to Facebook by clicking a link next to the comment. Facebook then sends an email to the person who posted the suicidal comment encouraging him or her to call a hotline or click on a link to begin a confidential chat.

AVAILABILITY: The program begins Tuesday. Crisis center workers will be available 24 hours a day.
