AIRPORT SECURITY: The European Union has adopted guidelines on using body scanners at airports. EU states and airports aren’t required to use these scanners, but they must follow the operational standards if they do.
THE CONCERNS: Some of these scanners, already used in the U.S. and elsewhere, produce nude-like images of passengers.
PRIVACY PROTECTIONS: Security scanners must not store or copy any of the images, and the staff analyzing the images will be in a room separate from where the actual screening is conducted. Passengers must be informed and be given the right to choose an alternative method of screening.
