Summary Box: Dell sees drive dearth hurting sales

THE SHORTAGE: Dell said Tuesday that will likely be hampered for a couple quarters by an industrywide shortage of computer storage drives that stemmed from recent flooding in Thailand.

THE GUIDANCE: Dell now expects 2011 revenue will be near the bottom of its guidance for growth of 1 to 5 percent over last year. The guidance range, issued in August, was itself a reduction from an earlier forecast.

THE RESULTS: Also Tuesday, Dell said its third-quarter net income climbed 9 percent while revenue remained flat year over year as the company kept pruning less profitable parts of its business.
