THE CHARGE: State media accused Twitter of helping spread a rumor that former Cuban leader Fidel Castro had died.
THE DETAILS: An article on the state-run Cubadebate website says Twitter allowed an account holder to start the rumor from an Italian server. It says Twitter then helped spread the disinformation by allowing the hash tag “fidelcastro” to become a trending topic. It briefly became the fourth most popular in the world as it drew many more people to the subject.
COMPANY RESPONSE: Although Twitter had no comment on the specifics of Cuba’s complaint, the company says it doesn’t mediate content.
