WHAT’S IN A NAME?: Because of a dispute over ownership of the iPad name, authorities have seized Apple’s tablet computer in a city in northern China.
ABOUT THE DISPUTE: Shenzhen Proview Technology registered the iPad name in China in 2001. Apple bought rights to it from a Taiwan affiliate, Proview Taipei, that registered it in various countries as early as 2000. The mainland company says it still owns the name in China.
WHAT NOW: Shenzhen Proview says it is asking for similar action in other cities. That threatens to complicate Apple’s efforts to sell the iPad in its fastest-growing market.
