THE TOP SPOTS: Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. zoomed to the top of the list of global smartphone makers in the second quarter, according to IDC. It jumped past Nokia Corp. and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd.
STILL NOT A RECORD: Apple sold 20.3 million iPhones in the second quarter. Although it took the top spot from Nokia, Apple has yet to top Nokia’s high-water mark of 28.1 million phones in a quarter. But IDC says it’s a matter of time.
CHALLENGES: Both Nokia and RIM have struggled to come up with an answer to the iPhone.
