THE PRODUCT: The Kindle Fire is the first full-color, touch-screen Kindle from Amazon.com Inc. It’s available in the U.S. starting Monday for $199.
COMPETITION: The Fire represents a challenge to Apple’s iPad, as does Barnes and Noble Inc.’s Nook Tablet, which comes out Friday for $249. The iPad starts at $499.
THE FINDINGS: Although the Fire makes the Kindle much more than an e-reader, it needs to be weighed against the competition. An Associated Press review finds that doing so makes it apparent just how spare Amazon had to keep the device to limbo under that $200 price level.
