NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are falling at midday as investors worry that a deal to cut Greece’s national debt and hold off a possible financial crisis might fall through.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 42 points at 12,666. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is three points lower at 1,313. The Nasdaq composite is flat at 2,783 after opening in the red.

A deal between the Greek government and the banks that hold Greek national bonds is considered to the stability of the European financial system. Investors fear that if Greece can’t pay its debt, it could trigger a panic.

At home, a slew of corporate earnings reports didn’t do much Tuesday to ease investors’ fears.
