Stocks open higher on strong earnings reports

    Stocks are opening higher after several big companies reported strong earnings for the second quarter.

    Google Inc., Mattel Inc. and Citigroup Inc. all reported higher income. Google jumped 13 percent, the most in the S&P 500 index.

    The market is on track for its biggest gain this week, a reversal after declines in four of the past five days. Indexes are still headed for weekly losses.

    Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones industrial average is up 56 points, or 0.4 percent, at 12,491. The S&P 500 is up 8, or 0.6 percent, at 1,317. The Nasdaq composite index is up 21, or 0.8 percent, at 2,784.
