Stocks fall as traders worry over weekend

NEW YORK (AP) ? A growing belief that the country is headed toward recession has given the stock market its fourth straight week of losses.

Major indexes fluctuated through most of Friday and athen accelerated their declines late in the day. Traders did not want to take the chance of holding stocks if the European debt situation worsened before trading resumed on Monday morning in New York.

The Dow is down 172 points, or 1.6 percent, to 10,817.

The S&P 500 is down 17, or 1.5 percent, to 1,123. The Nasdaq is down 38, or 1.6 percent, to 2,341.

Three stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was above average at 5.3 billion shares.
