WellStar Health System
Stephen Vault, vice president of business development and strategy for WellStar Health System, sums up his career objective with the hashtag, #LifeOfService. “It’s not the Hippocratic Oath, but it’s my ‘North Star.’ It’s my guiding principle for how I live my life and aspire to do my job,” says Vault. His job allows him to improve healthcare services for men, women and children throughout Georgia.
At WellStar, the largest health system in Georgia, he facilitates new business deals and transactions, oversees system strategic planning, and manages market intelligence and strategic partnerships. “I initially thought I would go into public service, but once I recognized the importance and impact of healthcare on our quality of life, I knew I had found my calling,” says Vault, a self-confessed politics junkie. He credits his mentor and “fairy godmother,” Marty Chafin, with encouraging him to leverage his business skills and acumen to champion healthcare in his earlier positions as director of strategic planning at WellStar and director of planning, and business-development director at Grady Health System. Vault sits on several local boards, including those of 100 Black Men of North Metro Inc., the Georgia Alliance for Health Literacy, and the Next Generation Advisory Board for Citizens Trust Bank, one of the nation’s oldest and largest minority-owned financial institutions. His work and service have garnered him numerous accolades. He was the recipient of the 2017 Hyatt Herald Award for outstanding community service, and was named a 40 Under Forty Award winner by both the “Atlanta Business Chronicle” and “Georgia Trend” magazines.
Vault holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration; a master’s in health administration from the University of Arkansas; and a doctorate in strategic management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
