Tips on How to Stay Healthy During the Retirement Years

  • Eat a healthy diet. Do not take your diet for granted since your health depends largely on what you put in your mouth. For best results, choose foods that are not only flavourful but are packed with the right nutrients (high in fiber and calcium and low in sodium and saturated fat) and are easily digestible. Make sure you eat at least one serving of raw fruits and vegetables on a daily basis and drink lots of water to keep you hydrated all throughout the day.
  • Cook your food right. To make sure you get the most from your diet, consider steaming or saut?ing your veggies. Do not boil them or you’ll risk losing the precious nutrients.
  • Move, move, move. Exercise plays a vital role in keeping your body in top condition. However, if you’re just about to start a routine, it is advisable that you take it slow. Be kind to your body. Ease into a particular routine gradually.?
  • Relax. Too much stress wouldn’t do you any good. It can negatively affect your mood, dampen your spirit and increase your heart rate and blood pressure. Meditation, visualization and deep breathing all work wonders in keeping you in a more relaxed state of mind so consider practicing one of these activities for about 15 to 20 minutes each and every single day. Listening to calming music can also be quite effective in easing away stress so you may also want to try how it works.
  • Express yourself. Don’t keep pent-up emotions bottled up inside you for it can definitely stress you out. Cultivate a good personal relationship with family and friends so you will always have a loving and supportive group around you. You definitely need such people in your life.
  • Know your numbers. Let’s face it. You need to be aware of your cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure levels if you want to make the most of your retirement years. Knowing these numbers can help you prevent the onslaught of various medical conditions that can ultimately compromise your health.
