BEIJING (AP) ? Sohu.com Inc., which operates a popular Chinese Web portal, said Monday its quarterly profit rose 17 percent from a year ago on strong online advertising and games revenue.
Profit was $45 million, or $1.17 per share, in the three months ending Sept. 30, Sohu announced. Revenues rose 42 percent to $233 million, beating expectations.
Sohu operates the Sogou search engine and a video service and owns a stake in online games company Changyou.
Online game revenues rose 35 percent over a year ago to $115.8 million.
“Our online gaming subsidiary Changyou once again exceeded its top-line and bottom-line financial goals,” chairman Charles Zhang said in a statement.
China has the world’s most populous Internet market with more than 485 million people online as of the end of June.
