On 12 June 2025, a sinkhole was discovered at the back side of the McGhee Tyson Airport parking garage. The authorities are trying to restore the Airport Loop Road as soon as possible to control the traffic. Workers are appointed by the Knoxville Airport authorities to cover the sinkhole and fill it, while the airport authorities are trying to provide alternative routes to travelers to manage the traffic during this season.

When was the Sinkhole found at McGhee Tyson Airport?

Around 6:30 pm on 12 June, a sinkhole was found at the Airport loop road where rental cars were parked and a Phone and wait lot was located. However, under the Airport Construction Project, these are no longer used by the Airport authorities.

What is the opinion of the authorities on the sinkhole?

Becky Huckaby, Vice President of Human Relations, has assured the travelers that the sinkhole has not damaged the front part of the pickup and drop-off locations of cars. Moreover, they have allotted alternative routes for the public so that they can reach their destination for their flight. However, they only request that travelers cooperate with them and follow their instructions to avoid inconvenience.

In addition, they have also advised them to arrive at least 3 hours before the flight takes off, as it will be difficult to manage the dense crowd during the traveling season. Alternative routes are provided on the official website of the airport, i.e., flyknoxville.com, where travelers can find the best route to reach the airport. They are advised to arrive early, as they were already supposed to arrive about 2 hours early at the airport. However, as the sinkhole has been discovered, it would be better if they arrived as early as possible.

What are the alternative routes to reach the airport?

At 10:30 pm, the authorities put out alternative routes for the travelers so that they could reach the airport for their flights. The rerouting is available on the official website of the airport, as mentioned above. However, we have shared the two alternative routes in this article as well.

Rerouting is live for the travelers coming from-

  • Knoxville
  • Blount County

Directions to reach McGhee Tyson Airport from Knoxville

All you need to do is ditch the previous route to reach the airport and take Alcoa Highway instead. The solution we have given to the drivers is that the upper and lower terminals of the airport are still in use. Also, they can avail of parking facilities at the airport.

The drivers are expected to wait on the phone and wait a lot in case their passenger is not ready for the pickup at that time. They are also advised not to go around the terminal loop, as it will directly lead them toward another entry point of the airport scheduled for

Drivers are instructed to get past the entrance on Alcoa Highway and continue moving to the Pellissippi Parkway exit. To reach their entrance point, they need to take the overleaf exit to get back on the Alcoa Highway and enter the main entrance.

As time-consuming as it sounds, the drivers need to manage to go through the same route as prescribed. They need to wait at the Phone and wait a lot in case their passenger has not arrived. To depart from the airport, they need to get back through the same route as mentioned above.

To tackle the situation, all that the authorities are demanding is to adhere to the instructions to avoid any sort of inconvenience later. They have assured the public to update them as soon as the route is available for use again.
