SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Hewlett-Packard is set to name Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO and California candidate for governor, as its new CEO, according to published reports.

The Wall Street Journal and the AllThingsD website, citing anonymous sources, reported that HP’s board has been discussing the move and that an announcement could come as soon as Thursday after the market closes.

Whitman’s appointment would be an embarrassing end to Leo Apotheker’s 11-month stint as HP’s CEO. It would be the second time in two years Apotheker has been forced out of a top technology job. He resigned from German business software maker SAP AG last year, after less than a year as CEO.
