President Barack Obama has requested $50 million to restore several historic civil rights sites including the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site; the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail; and the historic Little Rock Central High School.
The news comes as we?re upon the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.??
In honor of the anniversary, the president will travel to Selma next month where he will likely address his budget proposal for the investment in these sites that were an integral part of the civil rights movement.
The Selma march has been in the news lately after the release of Ava DuVernay?s much-anticipated ?Selma? film, which was nominated for an Academy award.?
According to The Hill, ?state, local and tribal governments can also apply for historic preservation funds to help them document and preserve stories and sites associated with the civil rights movement.?
