It’s no secret that the Ohio State Buckeyes are in the news, and they did not become an exception for February 2025. The Buckeyes are also making the right moves to build up their roster for the 2024 season as the college football world continues to buzz. Here’s a rundown of the biggest news on Ohio State’s transfer foibles and what it implies about the team going forward.

Alex Orji Joins the Buckeyes

In a huge development in the world of college football, elite edge rusher Alex Orji confirmed that he is transferring to Ohio State. Considered a physically domineering prospect with an explosive first step and a continuous motor, Orji should be an immediate contributor to the Buckeyes’ defense. His choice to sign with Ohio State comes after evaluating the program’s history of producing NFL-level players, especially under defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

The addition of Orji is a big win for the Buckeyes, who are hoping to reload their defensive front after some key players exited via the NFL Draft. His ability to hold the edge against the run and collapse the pocket on passing downs will be an asset to Ohio State’s aggressive defensive schemes.

Jaren Hamilton’s Unexpected Pivot

Most importantly, another transfer that made headlines was Jaren Hamilton, a top-notch receiver from Michigan. Hamilton’s decision to depart the Wolverines for their arch-rivals has stoked the already fierce Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. Hamilton also flashed impressive YAC ability — 6.3 YAC per reception in 2024 — turning short and intermediate catches into long gainers, while also showcasing the ability to stretch the field and make contested catches. His addition provides the Buckeyes with yet another dynamic weapon in their high-powered offense.

Hamilton’s transfer deals a major blow to Michigan, which now must replace one of its top offensive players. But for Ohio State, it’s a big lift as the Buckeyes look to continue their run as the top team in the Big Ten and a national title contender.

Bolstering the Offensive Line

Ohio State has also made moves to solidify its offensive line. While the Buckeyes landed the commitment of two tackles: a four-star tackle in Ethan Onianwa (Rice) and three-star Phillip Daniels (Minnesota). After only giving up one sack on 350 pass-blocking snaps in 2024, Onianwa would project as the starter at left tackle. Daniels played right tackle, at which less experienced but larger Daniels has potential.

Those additions will be key to keeping Ohio State’s quarterback safe and making running lanes available for their electric collection of running backs. Having lost a wealth of talent from previous classes to the NFL, the Buckeyes needed to reload their front, and Onianwa and Daniels are strong adds who help the depth and overall talent in that area of the field.

Running Back Depth

Meanwhile, the Buckeyes have rebuilt their running back room, with CJ Donaldson hitting the portal after a strong season at West Virginia. Donaldson, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards and 30 touchdowns in three seasons, will add a physical presence to Ohio State’s backfield. He figures to complement sophomore James Peoples in the backfield, giving Buffalo a 1-2 punch in the running game.

The change-up keeps Ohio State as a ground threat, losing all-world running backs to the NFL Draft. Donaldson’s experience and production add value to the Buckeyes’ offense.

Defensive Reinforcements

Defensive side: Ohio State is on the trail of Damon Wilson II, a wicked good linebacker out of Georgia. With the talent of a former five-star recruit, Wilson could be a difference-maker for the Buckeyes’ defense. At 6’4” and 250 pounds, he was a unique combination of size, speed, and athleticism, the kind of player who was an ideal fit for Ohio State’s aggressive defensive schemes.

Missouri is also in the running for Wilson, but many expect him to pick Ohio State based on the program’s success of late and defensive pedigree. His addition would make even stronger the Buckeyes’ defense, which is among the best in the nation.
