Obama to spend Labor Day at Detroit AFL-CIO rally

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is celebrating Labor Day in Detroit, addressing thousands of labor union members about his ideas to create jobs and help grow the economy.

Obama’s speech at a rally sponsored by the Metropolitan Detroit AFL-CIO may serve as a dry run for the jobs speech he’ll deliver before a joint session of Congress Thursday night.

The president’s appearance follows last week’s jobs report, which showed that employers added no jobs in August. It was the first time since 1945 that the government reported a net job change of zero.

Unemployment, meanwhile, held steady at 9.1 percent.

In the speech to Congress, Obama is expected to outline a mix of tax credits and public works spending and press lawmakers to act quickly on the proposals.
