WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is emphasizing that he would forgo his Hawaiian vacation and stay in Washington for “as long as it takes” Congress to extend payroll tax cuts and unemployment insurance. Both measures are set to expire at the end of the year.
Obama has said he will pressure lawmakers to stay in session until the tax cuts and unemployment benefits are extended.
On Thursday, Obama said he wouldn’t ask lawmakers to do something he’s not willing to do himself. He is scheduled to leave for Hawaii on Dec. 17, but says he will stay beyond that date if the work isn’t done.
Obama also delayed his trip to Hawaii last year so Congress could finish work on a series of issues.
