WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (AHN’-geh-lah MEHR’-kuhl) have spoken by telephone about the global economy and the crisis facing countries with the euro as their currency.

The White House says that in their conversation Saturday, the leaders agreed on the importance of concerted action, by both established and emerging economic powers, to address current challenges and to spur growth and job creation worldwide.

On the Mideast peace, Obama and Merkel agreed to keep working on a statement by international mediators that could encourage the Israelis and Palestinians to resume direct talks.
