WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House says the U.S. has a leadership role to play as Europe deals with its financial crisis. But it’s also making clear that Europe’s problems are its own to resolve with limited U.S. involvement.

Press secretary Jay Carney says the Greek prime minister’s surprise plan for a popular vote on the Europe bailout plan is certain to be a topic of discussion among President Barack Obama and world leaders in France. That’s where Obama was heading later Wednesday.

The president is to attend meetings of the Group of 20 industrial and developing nations on Thursday and Friday.

Carney says the U.S. has unique insight because of its experience dealing with its own financial crisis, as well as its position as the world’s largest economy.
