What Exactly Happened On Thursday Afternoon After The Battery Plant Caught Fire In Central California?

The Moss Landing Power Plant as well as the lithium-ion battery facility that is located just beside the plant at the Monterey County Coast caught fire this Thursday afternoon. The reason for the fire is still not clear. However, the company ensured the conduct of a thorough inquiry.

The company through an email confirmed that all the workers had been evacuated successfully. As the night fell, the black smoke as well as the flames did not subside. Hence, the authorities ordered the evacuation of the nearby areas due to safety concerns.

When Was The Evacuation Orders Issued?

Shortly after the authorities deduced that the fire was showing no signs of dying out, the authorities issued evacuation orders. Around 6:30 PM local time, the residents of several areas such as the South Elkhorn Slough and Highway 1 received the evacuation orders.

More than 15,00 people left the surrounding areas temporarily. No injuries or loss of life was recorded but the already existing paranoia among the residents did create havoc. The people were deeply concerned about their safety and so were the authorities.

Speculations Around The Reason That Caused The Fire

Prior to the latest fire, the plant faced similar disasters in the years 2021 and 2022. The reasons that caused those fires were later revealed. According to the inquiry, the fires were a result of a malfunction that occurred in the fire sprinkler system. This resulted in the overheating of some units and the disaster that later unfolded.

The reason for the latest fire that broke out in the Vistra Energy Moss Landing Power Plant is still not clear. The company will conduct an investigation soon. However, the speculations doing rounds suspect a similar malfunction or some technical issues that set the plant ablaze.

Exact Location And Background Of The Vistra Energy Power Plant

The Moss Landing Power Plant which is owned by Vistra Energy is apparently one of the world’s largest battery plants. It is situated around 77 miles south of San Francisco. The company finished the recent construction phase in the year 2023.

The latest construction was a part of California’s efforts to strengthen its clean energy sector. The power plant stored around 750 megawatts of energy. The power can apparently support 562,000 homes for a rough span of 4 hours.

Safety Concerns Throughout The Years

The Moss Landing Power Plant that caught fire this Thursday already had pre-existing safety concerns attached to it. The power plant stored more than thousands of lithium batteries. These batteries were important for storing electricity generated from natural sources like solar energy. However, if these batteries catch fire, the blazes will definitely cause a huge disaster as it is difficult to put them out.

The power plant already faced major losses from the last two fires that broke out in 2021 and 2022. Hence, many expressed their concerns about another possible disaster that may occur and it did.

School And Office Closures Across North Monterey County

The authorities from North Monterey County declared through a post on Instagram that all the schools and offices across the area will be closed. The black smoke in the environment may turn hazardous to the health.

Hence, people are also instructed to close their windows in order to protect themselves from the soot. Those who have prior respiratory problems are instructed to be extra careful.

Pajaro Valley Unified School District through a post on social media informed the residents that the schools in their area will be open. The officials stated that they are in contact with the emergency authorities and monitoring the air quality.

Latest Updates On The Fire In Central California
