Mary J. Blige is being sued by her longstanding friend, fashion stylist and entrepreneur Misa Hylton, for $5 million. The case involves hip hop rapper Vado, who alleged that Blige interfered in a legally binding management agreement between Vado and Hylton’s company, M.I.S.A. Both the music and entertainment industries have taken notice of the situation because of its legal claims and personal history between the two women.

Named as defendants are Mary J. Blige, along with her company, Beautiful Life Productions, on which the lawsuit was filed in late April 2025. Blige claims that she had conferrable power to persuade Vado to renounce his obligations, to Hylton’s damage on a pair of things: income, and professionalism.

Details of the Agreement

Hylton, who was also signed on by Harlem-based rapper Vado in July 2023, signed a management contract for four years with the artist, according to legal documents. Under the terms of that agreement, her company was to earn 20% of the artist’s earnings. In October 2023, just three months later, Vado had signed a distribution deal for his music with Mary J Blige’s Beautiful Life Productions.

Until July 2024, Hylton says everything appeared to be progressing until he says Vado had completed his debut album under that partnership. Everything changed at that point, she claims. In addition, Vado claims that Mary J. Blige began to apply heat on him to get him to split from his management deal with her. The lawsuit claims that this included allowing him special access to events, private meetings, and even other perks in order to sway him.

Allegations of Career Sabotage

Hylton’s complaint says that Blige had directly sabotaged Vado’s career. Blige claims that the rapper was threatening to shelve her company’s album and end his tour opportunities unless he calls it off with her company. Hylton also believes that Vado’s boyfriend, who was also Blige’s head of security, had a personal interest in having Vado managed by himself.

She indicates she has text messages and other evidence showing Blige acted to get Vado out of the deal. She says the outcome resulted in a ‘principled brain drain’ that left the rapper in ‘economic servitude’ to file music or to repay money advanced in the case of the rapper’s recording deal

Seeking Damages and Protection

Hylton is accusing Johnston of breach of contract, emotional distress, and interference with business relations, and is seeking damages of $5 million. And she’s also asking the court for an injunction which would prevent Blige and her company from taking further steps to interfere in Vado’s career or whatever she even relates to him with M.I.S.A.

Mary J. Blige has yet to speak on the lawsuit. In addition, her legal team has not issued any official statement. With the people involved being of such high profile, it is sure that the case will be a focus in the coming weeks.

A Pattern of Legal Trouble?

Though she rarely, if ever, is Blige herself the direct target of legal disputes, this is not the first time Blige has been linked to legal disputes. A copyright lawsuit she was named in in 2024 stemmed from her 1992 hit “Real Love,” which sampled ‘Impeach the President.’ In that case, Blige was not named, but her name was linked in legal filings related to music publishers and sampling rights.

Conclusion

And the lawsuit that Misa Hylton filed on the careers of two of the entertainment world’s long-time friends adds a dramatic chapter. At issue in the legal battle is what it means to influence, to make a contract, and professional ethics. Neither side knows if the case will quietly settle or head to trial. One thing is for sure though, this legal battle could cripple the careers of Misa Hylton, Mary J Blige and Vado’s career in the music business.
